The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is another elevation values dataset available for Utah from the AGRC. These elevation models were created from the best available DEMs. Much of the line distortion is then filtered out of the NED. Because of the filtering it gives a clearer picture than the standard DEM.
Utah's NED is available for download by county at 10 and 30 meter resolutions. A statewide 30 meter hillshade (StateWideHillshd30.zip 250mb) and grid (StateWideNED_30.zip 975mb) are also available from the FTP site. This dataset is projected to UTM Zone 12 NAD83 meters. The vertical datum is NAVD88. For more information about the NED go to http://ned.usgs.gov/ . For further information on downloading the NED contact Rick Kelson (801-538-3237).
In order to make the .dem file useable it needs to be converted into a Raster/Grid. In the ArcMap 9.x toolbox use the Conversion Tool - DEM to Raster. With ArcInfo workstation use the DEMLATTICE command. Make sure your folder names or directory structure does not contain spaces.
Another way to access the NED Map Service is through the Geography Network Explorer http://www.geographynetwork.com/explorer/explorer.jsp?mode=arcmap . If you are working with ArcMap, you can connect with the internet and the Geography Network to view many types of spatial data, including the NED. In ArcMap go to File->Add Data From The Internet and select Geography Network. When you connect to the Geography Network, select Live Data and Maps and Elevetion & Derived Prods and hit Search. When the Live Data and Maps Content Found by Search comes up scroll down to Content Title: National Elevation Dataset - Shaded Relief and click Add To ArcMap.
