Interim Geologic Map of the Seep Ridge 30' x 60' Quadrangle, Uintah, Duchesne, and Carbon Counties, Utah, and Garfield and Rio Blanco Counties, Colorado (OFR 549DM)

The Seep Ridge 30' x 60' quadrangle is located in the southeastern part of the Uinta Basin, a rich storehouse of energy resources. Oil and gas are the most important resources in the quadrangle, with production mostly from the Triassic- Jurassic Wingate Sandstone, Jurassic Entrada Sandstone, Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation and Mesaverde Group, and Tertiary Wasatch and Green River Formations. No settlements, except for a few scattered ranches, and no paved roads are in the quadrangle. The abandoned towns of Dragon, Rainbow, and Watson in the eastern part of the quadrangle thrived in the early 1900s due to gilsonite mining. Gilsonite veins are still mined within the quadrangle, but the largest operation is near Bonanza, Utah, to the north in the Vernal 30' x 60' quadrangle. Oil shale beds in the Green River Formation are a potential resource; the richest deposits are in the Mahogany oil-shale zone of the Parachute Creek Member.
