Meh...you're going to have a hard time weeding out the good and bad programmers from a place like SL.

I'm in a windows/esri shop, so while I've heard good things about those open source web apps that you mention, I have no experience with them.

The non-GIS python community is really helpful, so hitting up some of those folks will get you pointed in the right direction!

Re:Welcome Pythonistas!!! 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Thanks for the suggestion on wxPython. Bought the book and I've been playing with it for awhile. The learning curve was a bit steep but some persistence paid off.

I'm a newly graduated Geography major exploring the job market and I've noticed I'm lacking with IT skills. As far as scripting goes it appears python is the popular choice.

My next hurdle is the ability to put an application on the web. I've viewed ESRI tutorials on ArcIMS and ArcSDE and they seem much easier to implement than some open source apps I've encountered. The price tags of the said software is out of my range which leaves me to explore open source options.

Any advice or suggestions on MapServer, PostGIS, Grass or others? Most of these apps prove difficult as well as frustrating to install and implement. Any tutorials or books available for a newbie like me?

thanks in advance, Mike

GRASS GIS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) is a free, open source geographical information system (GIS) capable of handling raster, topological vector, image processing, and graphic data.

wxPython is a great GUI library that you'll want to look into. It's not as easy as VB GUI's, but it's pretty intuitive once you jump in. I really like the book "wxPython in Action" which should get you going in no time! good luck...

Rasters 4 Months, 1 Week ago
Hello, Mike here. I'm presently doing some volunteer GIS work for the "Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies". It involves mostly raster conversions using the "Spatial Analyst" extension. I'm kind of new to rasters and I'm constantly experimenting with various SP tools as well as third party python scripts, mostly from ESRI ArcScripts.

To the point:

I have novice skills with Java and newly acquired skills with Python.

I'd like to have a Python GUI which allows me to pick various methods from the GP.Describe() object. Is it possible to have a script within my "ToolBox" which would produce drop down lists of various describe methods as well as required parameters.

I'm just looking for a quick way to view my efforts as most of them are usually wrong or experimental.

Welcome Pythonistas!!! 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Thank you to everyone who endured my python classes at UGIC 2008! I've volunteered to monitor this forum, which mainly involves deleting Viagra advertisements and the like. I'm sure there are much better python programmers out there, so if you are one or know any, please let them know about this forum!

Is anyone working on anything interesting?

Kevin
