Import and Conversion of Tagged Vector Contour (TVC) Files

Discussion

The TVC files are an intermediate product of digital elevation model (DEM).  The TVC files are vector topograph lines that match the 7.5 minute USGS Quad maps.  Although they were created by USGS, the USGS and the AGRC do NOT provide any support for this data.

To convert the TVC files into a shape file follow the following process.

  1. Run the AML script called DLG2ARC to convert the TVC files into a ESRI coverage.  This process will convert every file that has a *.do extension and create a coverage.

DLG2ARC.aml can be found at: ftp://ftp.agrc.state.ut.us/TVC/ .

  1. Then convert the coverages into shapefiles or Geo Database files.

  1. Check the projection!  These files are in UTM coordinates.

The letter designates the datum. (ie. Q0222a.do is UTM NAD27)
             a = nad27    b = nad83    x = not determined
Files with a 02 (ie. q1102a.do) are on the border of Utah and Arizona and are in zone 11 and need to be reprojected to zone12.

  1. Change the file name back to the USGS 7.5 minute quad name keeping the appropriate geospatial data file extension.

Example TVC file:
Text Box:
The green lines represent the elevation attributes that are equivalent to the USGS 7.5 minute maps, and can be used in conjunction with automated H&H modeling packages.  The red lines represent connection lines without elevation data and cannot be used in automated modeling packages.
