AGRC plans to have a new ArcSDE 9.3 database server available by the end of January, 2009. From the time it goes into production mode, this server will contain the most current version of all vector GIS data in the public portion of the State Geographic Information Database. Several big changes are planned that will affect all users of SGID data layers through an ArcSDE database connection. In addition, the restructuring of the SGID will have an impact on how the file-based vector data on the ftp download site is organized. First, AGRC will be removing the feature datasets that have been used primarily for data layer categorization. Second, the user names that were used to designate source scale (U024, U100, etc) will be removed. In general, we plan to archive some of the older, coarse scale data but when it's still relevant the coarser scale data will carry a scale designation in the feature class name. Third, AGRC is seriously considering adopting the 19 topic categories defined by the ISO 19111 geographic information standard (see summary list below). This will mean that all vector data in the SGID will be organized according tothese topic categories. Where appropriate, prefixes will be added to names to group similar datasets together when listed alphabetically. Just a few examples: - OLD: SGID.U024.Administration.Municipalities --> NEW: SGID.Boundaries.Municipalities
- OLD: SGID.U024.Administration.LandOwnership --> NEW: SGID.PlanningCadastre.LandOwnership
- OLD: SGID.U024.Administration.ZipCodes --> NEW: SGID.Location.Postal_ZipCodes
- OLD: SGID.U024.Administration.SalesTaxAreas --> NEW: SGID.Economy.Revenue_SalesTaxArea
- OLD: SGID.U024.Energy.DNROilGasWells --> NEW: SGID.Economy.Energy_DOGMOilGasWells
- OLD: SGID.U024.Geology.Faultlines --> NEW: SGID.Geoscientific.FaultLines
- OLD: SGID.U024.Hydrology.StreamsNHDHighRes --> NEW: SGID.InlandWaters.StreamsNHDHighRes
- OLD: SGID.U024.Reference.PLSSSections_GCDB --> NEW: SGID.PlanningCasdastre.PLSS_SectionsGCDB
- OLD: SGID.U024.Transportation.StatewideStreets --> NEW: SGID.Transportation.Roads_StatewideStreets
- OLD: SGID.U024.Wilderness.BLM98WildernessReinventory --> NEW: SGID.Environment.Wilderness_BLM98Reinventory
These look like big changes and they are. The reasoning is as follows: - the pesky feature datasets need to go as they severly hinder AGRC's ability to keep data updated
- everyone is going to have to repoint their existing layers due to the feature dataset removal anyway, so we might as well try to make any structural changes on the horizon so we only have to do this once
- adopting the ISO standard will make the SGID organizational structure more compliant and usable to a wider audience.
Like any big change, this will take some time for familiarization. As the plan for the ArcGIS 9.3 conversion matures, AGRC will publish details on the Utah GIS Portal. In addition, resources such as a conversion reference table and possibly a VBA script to automate the repointing of ArcMap layers to the new 9.3 feature classes, will be made available. AGRC is planning to keep the existing 9.2 server in production, using its existing structure, for approximately 6 months after the 9.3 server comes online.
