The Utah Geological Survey created digital 15- and 30-minute vintage U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle maps (1900-1966) by scanning original paper maps at a resolution of 500 dots per inch (dpi). These digital scans were enhanced in Adobe Photoshop as needed, with subsequent 16 point spline georeferencing in ArcMap. The resultant TIFF files are served on the AGRC ImageServer with on-the-fly collar clipping, producing a seamless map where adjacent quadrangle maps are available.
These files are also available from the SGID ftp site:
Dear Rick, I've downloaded two of these images, Ft. Douglas and Coalville. The only software I have that can open images of this size is Microdem, PhotoFiltre, and Irfanview. Both maps open in these programs as negatives and in black and white, with none of the color of the provided example. They have a black background with grey lettering. Do they open as color images for you?
I am having a problem with opening the tif file for the 62_5K quads. I have opened the FTP site in Windows Explorer. Coppied and pasted the files for the quad into my own directory. When I click on the tif file to veiw the scanned image , there is no preview available. I've tried using Adobe Illustrator but gives an error saying Adobe does not support the tif type. Am I missing something when down loading the scanned image? Can you help me out please?
Nancy, The files you are trying to view are very large, too large for most software to view. Unfortunately if you were able to view the image you would see that the way the vintage maps were scanned and georeferenced (outside of our office) the final images display as a negative of the image in most software. The images display without problem in ArcMap and GlobalMapper.
