Important: AGRC Server Domain Name Change, Sept 16th

Written by AGRC Administrator,

The Utah Department of Technology Services, as part of a mandate to meet best practices for implementing secure DNS, is splitting the state DNS servers into internal and external environments. The domain “utah.gov” will be the State’s official public-facing domain. Any records hosted on the State’s internal DNS servers (state.ut.us) will not be accessible from the Internet unless through use of the State’s VPN service. This change is currently scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th @ 18:00 hrs.

This change will affect your ability to access the following AGRC resources: 9.2 SGID, Image Server, and direct FTP data download.

What is AGRC doing?

AGRC is supporting DTS's efforts to implement secure DNS by changing several of our domains to meet the utah.gov requirement for publicly available resources. Several of our most used addresses will be changing:

  • from state.ut.us
  • to the utah.gov format.

It is important to note that the "new" domains are already working now. You should change any references to the old domains as soon as possible to ensure that you continue to have access to AGRC's data after the September 16th deadline.

The changes are outlined below:

SGID Vector Data:

If you are currently connecting to the pre-9.3 SGID using agrc.state.ut.us, the new domain will be gdb92.agrc.utah.gov. This can be changed in the properties for the connection using ArcCatalog.

If you are connecting to the 9.3 version of the SGID using gdb93.agrc.utah.gov, no change will be needed as it already references the correct domain.

Image Server:

If you currently connect to AGRC's Image Server using image.state.ut.us, the new domain will be image.agrc.utah.gov. This can be changed in the Image Server dialog box. If your Image Server client already connects to AGRC using the image.state.ut.us domain, you will need to change the address to image.agrc.utah.gov.

Important: After making the change, you'll need to bring imagery into ArcMap for the change to take effect.

FTP Server:

If you currently access AGRC's FTP server using ftp.agrc.state.ut.us, the new domain will be ftp.agrc.utah.gov. All links to the FTP server from gis.utah.gov webpages have already been update.

We received some additional suggestions from Gary at DWR... mf

AGRC Domain Change:

I have written down some instructions concerning the domain changes. You must be connected to the internet to make the changes.

For the new database connection:
In any ArcMap document, click, or double click, the add data button, navigate in the file tree to Database Connections and select Add Spatial Database Connection and click Add. The Spatial Database Connection panel should open. Type in the new server name as indicated by the web page instructions, for example, since I have the 9.3 version I would type in “gdb93.agrc.utah.gov” If you don’t know your ArcGIS version, right click on your desktop icon and go to properties, general tab.

For the rest of the panel: Service remains the same “5151” and Username remains “agrc” and then you must type in the same password “agrc” then click on Test Connection. When your test has succeeded, click OK.

If you wish to delete the old database connection, you must open ArcCatalog. In the file tree on the left side, select the connection you wish to delete and right click, choose Delete.

For the Image Server connection change:
In any ArcMap document, click on the add image service button. The Add Image Service Connection panel should open. In the Server Name type in “image.agrc.utah.gov”. After you type in the image server name, you must hit Enter, then you can add an image service.

You must then add one of the images to your map for this change to remain effective. No other actions are required. Also, this change is not version sensitive (unless you still have 9.1 or earlier, in which case you never had image service).
