USU's Virtual Utah Data & Map Server PDF Print E-mail

Written by R. Douglas Ramsey,

Virtual Utah is a internet map viewer and WMS data server hosted by Utah State University's Remote Sensing and GIS (RS/GIS) Laboratory

The Virtual Utah browser-based map viewer offers aerial and satellite imagery for the state from 1993/97, 2003, 2004 and 2006.

With the Basic Viewer you can pan and zoom to the location of interest, query map layers, generate a map and save it as a .pdf file.

The Advanced Viewer has the same functionality as the Basic Viewer, but also allows you to overlay datasets and change the opacity of the top layer as well as "slide" the top layer. Using aerial images from multiple dates allows you to see how land use has changed over the years! Other geographic datasets include land cover, hillshade (shaded relief), elevation data, and other satellite images.

The Virtual Utah Web Map Service (WMS) provides the same spatial data available in the browser-based map viewer directly to WMS-compliant clients. This means that you can access the imagery and other layers through your own software rather than through an online viewers. Details for using this WMS are available from the Virtual Utah WMS Access webpage.

WMS compliant-clients include:

  • ArcGIS 9.x
  • ArcGIS 3.x (with extension)
  • Google Earth
  • Intergraph OGC Viewer
  • Quantum GIS
  • OpenJUMP
  • uDig
  • gvSIG
  • MapWindow GIS
  • NASA World Wind
