The U024.Municipalities layer has been updated to bring it up to the federal Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) standard that is soon expected to be the ANSI standard for both city names and numeric city codes. Edits have been made to:
Add a field called GNIS and assign values to that field representing the 7 digit numeric GNIS ID number for each municipality. And,
Change, where needed, the municipalities' NAME field value to reflect the official GNIS populated place name for each municipality. Changes made to the NAME Field are as follows:
West Valley to West Valley City
Tooele City to Tooele
Heber to Heber City
Roy City to Roy
Farr West City to Farr West
Draper City to Draper
Washington City to Washington
La Verkin to LaVerkin
Hildale City to Hildale
East Carbon to East Carbon City
Brigham to Brigham City
Boulder to Boulder Town
Notes:
These changes do not affect values in the SHORTDESC field used by the State Tax Commission's taxing entity database (CASS)
Several municipalities include area within more than one county. Examples of this are found in Park City, Draper, and Santaquin. According to the GNIS folks the recommended way to refer to the unique county-city combinations is to use the FIPS county code together with the GNIS populated place name code.
There are two ambiguous GNIS codes that AGRC is working to resolve...they are for South Salt Lake and Layton. The GNIS currently has two entries for the same placename in the same county and we'll ask for guidance on which one to use for the incorporated municipality.
