Zip Code Changes: West Jordan, Cedar City (July 1, 08) PDF Print E-mail

Written by Bert Granberg,

The US Postal Service is changing zipcodes in areas of West Jordan and Cedar City beginning in July of 2008 ( see Salt Lake Tribune Article below).

Due to these changes, two SGID GIS layers and services will need to be updated on or around July 1, 2008.

Several layers and services that will be impacted include:

  • U024.StatewideStreets
  • U024.ZipCodes
  • GC_StatewideStreets geocoding services (4)
  • mapserv.utah.gov's Address GeoLocator web service (WSUTSGID_Geolocator) and all of the ArcGIS server applications hosted by AGRC that utilize this service

A posting will be made to the Utah GIS Portal when the updated data is available and the updated services are locating addresses against the updated data.

West Jordan, Cedar City getting new ZIP codes

by Rosemary Winters, Salt Lake Tribune

West-side West Jordan residents will have a new ZIP code starting July 1, 2008

To keep up with rapid growth in Utah's fourth-most-populous city, the U.S. Postal Service has created 84081 for West Jordan addresses west of 4800 West (emphasis added). The change affects 10,000 households.

The city's population topped 100,000 last year and is expected to reach 165,000 in the next 30 years.

Cedar City also gets a ZIP code switch in July. The 7,000 addresses north of 200 North will be tagged with 84721, the ZIP currently used for post-office boxes in Cedar City (emphasis added).

After such a change, the Postal Service continues to deliver mail with an old ZIP code during a one-year grace period. The agency also notifies municipalities, banks, utilities, credit-card companies and major business mailers of ZIP shifts.

AGRC note: Before the July 1, 2008 change, the 84084 and 84088 extended west to UT-111 and were split along 7800 South.
