2009 Aerial Photography Acquisition PDF Print E-mail

Written by Jeannie Watanabe,

The Utah GIS community has another opportunity to develop partnerships to leverage federal funds for acquiring aerial imagery in 2009.

The USGS will support the acquisition of one foot imagery along the Wasatch Front roughly from Spanish Fork to Brigham City and the Dugway Proving Ground. A pdf-based map shows the specific areas that USGS will fund within the light green boundary.

Through our partnership for the 2006 imagery, we were able to significantly increase the area covered as well as upgrading to a better resolution.  We have an opportunity to use partnerships to aquire specific areas if your agency is interested in participating.   Generally the better pricing was based on increasing the size of the areas that were contiguous.  The flight would be in the spring of 2009 for the USGS areas.  Vendor(s) will be selected through the state's purchasing processes.  An invitation to be will be issued mid-Oct. that requests pricing for one-foot and six-inch natural color imagery for various sizes of acquisition areas.  Potential partners will be able to use this pricing matrix to determine what areas they would like to acquire.  By the end of December 2008 all partnership agreements must be signed to allow the AGRC to complete contracts with selected vendors.

We have some time to get the details worked out, including getting your input to define the specs for the products, but would like to begin identifying partners. If your agency is interested in participating, please contact:

High Resolution Orthophotography (HRO) 1 foot Color Aerial Photography PDF Print E-mail

Written by AGRC Administrator,

The High Resolution Orthophotography (HRO) 1 foot Color Aerial Photography from 2006 has started arriving at AGRC. Check the status graphic at http://gis.utah.gov/images/sgidraster/Available_HRO2006.jpg to see if your area(s) of interest is available yet. Each tile block is in GeoTIFF file format, is named according to US National Grid standards, and covers a 4000×4000 meter area. The file sizes for these blocks are around 740mb. As the various tiles arrive they will be available through ImageServer and FTP download (see below). If you need large areas covered by the imagery, it is suggested you deliver or mail an external hard drive on which to upload the data to Rick Kelson at AGRC.

About FTP download of the new HRO imagery: The large file size of the HRO tile block GeoTIFF files results in long FTP download times and also the need for these files to be stored in two separate directories. All HRO tiles for areas north of the southern-most point of Utah lake will be available from ftp://ftp.agrc.utah.gov/Imagery/HRO2006_1Ft_No/HRO2006_1Ft_No/. HRO tiles south of the southern-most point of Utah lake will be available from ftp://ftp.agrc.utah.gov/Imagery/HRO2006_1Ft_So/HRO2006_1Ft_So/

A shapefile index of HRO tiles with their filenames is available at: ftp://ftp.agrc.utah.gov/Imagery/HRO2006_1Ft_So/HRO2006_1Ft_So/hro2006_index.zip.

Tips on using HRO Imagery in ArcMap
In ArcMap, the HRO imagery is best viewed with a couple of changes to the layer properties. Add the HRO 2006 imagery (from ImageServer) as a layer in ArcMap. Right click the newly added HRO layer and choose Properties. Under the Display tab check the box next to “Make service background color transparent” and under the Service Properties tab change the Compression method to “Uncompressed” or “LZ77″. These adjustments to the HRO2006 Layer Properties will allow you to overlay the HRO imagery over other imagery data with a larger extent, like the NAIP2006 service, minimizing No Data or “Scalloping” issues.
