SGID 9.3 ArcSDE Database Server Now Available PDF Print E-mail

Written by Bert Granberg,

SGID logoConnections to the new State Geographic Information Database ArcSDE 9.3 Geodatabase Server are now available. The 9.3 SGID Geodatabase has been reorganized to improve the usability of data category and feature class names. The new category names attempt to balance the desire to use ISO Topic Category names, where possible, with basic usability for Utah GIS users.

Say goodbye to SGID.U024.Administration.CountyBoundaries...

Say hello to SGID93.Boundaries.Counties.

As of July 7th, 2pm MST, all shapefile and geodatabase download files now carry the new SGID93 name and category conventions.

The SGID 9.3 categories are as follows:

  •  Bioscience
  •  Environment
  •  Planning
  •  Boundaries
  •  Geoscience
  •  Political
  •  Cadastre
  •  Health
  •  Recreation
  •  Economy
  •  History
  •  Transportation
  •  Elevation
  •  Indices
  •  Utilities
  •  Energy
  •  Location
  •  Water

Additional categories (farming, climate, military, structures) will be added as needed.

Making the Switch

The 9.2 SDE server will likely stay operational until this Fall so there is no urgency to make the switch to 9.3, although AGRC will only be adding updating data layers in the 9.3 database.

VBA-based 'RePoint' script to automatically repoint your ArcMap layers from 9.2 feature classes to 9.3 feature classes is now available. In addition, a complete listing of the translation from 9.2 to 9.3 SGID feature classes can be found in a number of formats.

  • SGID 9.2 Database Table: SGID.U024.TranslateFCNames_92_To_93
  • SGID 9.3 Database Table: SGID.Indices.TranslateFCNames_92_To_93
  • File-based documents containing the translation tables [.pdf, .dbf, .xls]

A couple of other notes:

  • If you want to connect to the SGID93 Archive database with older layers like the 1990 Census data or previous years' municipal boundaries, change the connection 'Database' parameter from SGID93 to SGID93_Archive.
  • The file-based download products (zipped FileGDB and Shapefiles) will also adopt the new categories and feature classnames. Completed 7/7/09
  • GlobalID fields have been added to a few feature classes to aid replication to child databases. At first we indicated that all feature classes would carry globals. The current thinking is we'll do some of the framework layers like roads, cities, counties, etc. and do others by request where practical. Shapefiles and FGDB products will not carry the Global ID GUIDs.
  • The SGID badly needs a new logo (see upper right corner, is that a clock?)...please send us any thoughts you have
  • The new 9.3 SDE implementation is a 'soft roll out'...expect to find a few issues along the way and when you do, please report them to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

How to connect to the new SGID 9.3 ArcSDE Database Server

SGID GIS feature classes (or data layers as they are generically referred to) can be accessed by ArcGIS 9.3 applications using the connection information provided in the graphics below or you can download the zipped connection file [.zip]. Just unzip the .sde file into your C:/Documents and Settings/USERNAME/Application Data/ESRI/ArcCatalog folder.  (note: you will not be able to access the 9.3 server with ArcGIS 9.2 applications or other earlier releases)

1. In ArcCatalog or ArcMap (from Add Data), browse to Add Spatial Database Connections.

Connection info to SGID 9.3 Database

2. Provide the following connection information, including the password 'agrc'. Note: changing the 'Database' parameter to SGID93_Archive connects to a set of older data layers.

The server should now be accessible to folks outside of the state network.

Looks great!

The SGID93_Archive database with older data layers is now available. Use the same connection information shown above but change the 'Database' parameter to SGID93_Archive

I like the category scheme that has been selected. It is a great improvement over the category/scale scheme of old. Is there a plan to take the features and place them into feature datasets by those categories? As data gets added and the number of features expands, is there a concern about the bulkiness of having the features under a single workspace?

I like the new 9.3 database structure. Very intuitive and easy to navigate. The naming conventions are straight forward, using owner names as the categories. Real smart way to go!

GIS Data servers are helpful. Thanks.
