AGRC is finalizing the completion of a major SDE Database Server upgrade. These changes will provide significant hardware and software enhancements to the State Geographic Information Database (SGID). The changes being made will impact all users of an ArcGIS SDE Database Connection to the SGID server. When and What?... As of approximately 5pm, Friday, December 15, 2006, the DNS entry for the server name agrc.state.ut.us will be changed to point at our new ArcSDE 9.2 server. Connections to agrc.state.ut.us will then only work with a ArcGIS 9.2 client. However, after this switch the 9.0 SDE server will be remain on line but will only be accessible by specifying the 9.0 server's new name, oldagrc.state.ut.us (other connection parameters will stay the same). The data content on legacy 9.0 SDE server will not be kept current and this machine will be taken out of service at the end of February, 2007. Major Changes... One of the major changes that users will notice is that there will be no imagery datasets stored on the new 9.2 SDE Server. AGRC now has an ESRI ImageServer instance containing the SGID's imagery and scanned map products. ImageServer provides much faster delivery and use of the SGID imagery products and very robust on-the-fly image quality controls, BUT, you will need to install and configure the ImageServer client on your machine to connect to these datasets. The ImageServer client will require ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 and the installation of the .NET 2.0 Framework. AGRC will provide the ImageServer client and detailed installation instructions upon request. at 801-537-9271. A connection to oldagrc.state.ut.us will allow access to imagery/raster datasets in SDE9.0 through February. Another major change to be found on the 9.2 SDE database server is that all of the versioned editing datasets that AGRC is hosting for local, state, and federal agencies are now in separate databases. AGRC is working with these agencies to make the necessary changes. Public data in these datasets will soon be replicated to the main 9.2 SGID database. In the meantime, if you need access to these versioned datasets, please contact Matt or Michael (contact info above). Big Opportunities...
ArcSDE 9.2 will provide AGRC and others with the ability to replicate data from one SDE server to another. This will greatly enhance our capacity for designing and implementing a federated GIS process, wherein local data is easily brought together into statewide, enterprise resources. AGRC looks forward to working with Utah GIS users to explore the opportunities this technology presents. Lastly... To better serve SGID users, AGRC requests that you send an email to
