A new place name or landmark polygon feature class is now available from the SGID ArcSDE database server. This dataset is named PlacenameAreas and is found in the U024.Geography feature dataset.
This dataset is meant as a layer for for general geographic reference. It includes polygons representing features such as parks, golf courses, open space, wild life refuges, federal and state lands, military reservations, tribal lands, etc. It includes the Census Bureau’s Landmark CFCC codes for cartographic purposes ( see http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tiger2k/tiger2k.pdf , page 70 for the codes).
This data was compiled by Blue Stakes of Utah from federal, state, and local government data providers for use as a background map layer for their internal “One Call, Call Before You Dig” mapping interface. Detailed data was initially obtained courtesy of Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties (this is detailed in a MS Excel .xls file attached to the metadata). Some features have been generalized to reduce the vertex density and speed drawing. The dataset is by no means all inclusive. If you have features that you would like to submit to this dataset please contact AGRC as we will be working to add and improve to this dataset. One task left to complete is to dissolve polygons across county boundaries.
